Bunion

A bunion (medical term: hallux valgus) is a bony bump that forms on the side of the big toe joint, causing the big toe to angle toward the second toe.

Causes:

  • Genetic predisposition
  • Wearing tight, narrow, or high-heeled shoes
  • Flat feet or abnormal foot mechanics
  • Arthritis, especially rheumatoid arthritis

Symptoms:

  • Visible bump on the side of the foot
  • Pain, swelling, or redness around the big toe joint
  • Difficulty wearing shoes
  • Reduced movement of the big toe

Diagnosis:

  • Clinical examination
  • X-ray to assess severity and joint alignment

Treatment:

  • Non-surgical: Wide shoes, bunion pads, orthotics, pain relievers
  • Surgical: Bunionectomy (realignment or removal of the bony bump) if conservative treatment fails
