Cross Over Toes

Crossover toes is a deformity where one toe (commonly the second toe) crosses over the adjacent toe, often overlapping the big toe.

Causes:

  • Chronic inflammation or instability of ligaments
  • Hallux valgus (bunion) pushing the second toe
  • Long second toe or tight shoes
  • Rheumatoid arthritis or trauma

Symptoms:

  • Toe overlap and visible deformity
  • Pain or irritation in the ball of the foot
  • Difficulty wearing regular footwear
  • Corns or calluses due to friction

Diagnosis:

  • Physical exam
  • X-rays to assess joint alignment and deformity

Treatment:

  • Conservative: Taping, toe spacers, wide shoes, orthotics
  • Surgical: Tendon release or realignment procedures if deformity is severe or painful
