Crossover toes is a deformity where one toe (commonly the second toe) crosses over the adjacent toe, often overlapping the big toe.
Causes:
- Chronic inflammation or instability of ligaments
- Hallux valgus (bunion) pushing the second toe
- Long second toe or tight shoes
- Rheumatoid arthritis or trauma
Symptoms:
- Toe overlap and visible deformity
- Pain or irritation in the ball of the foot
- Difficulty wearing regular footwear
- Corns or calluses due to friction
Diagnosis:
- Physical exam
- X-rays to assess joint alignment and deformity
Treatment:
- Conservative: Taping, toe spacers, wide shoes, orthotics
- Surgical: Tendon release or realignment procedures if deformity is severe or painful
