Achilles Tendon Injury

Achilles tendon disorders refer to a group of conditions affecting the Achilles tendon, the largest tendon in the body, which connects the calf muscles to the heel bone.

Common Conditions:

  • Achilles tendinitis: Inflammation due to overuse
  • Achilles tendinosis: Degeneration of tendon fibers without inflammation
  • Insertional tendinopathy: Pain at the tendon’s attachment to the heel
  • Achilles tendon rupture: Partial or complete tear of the tendon

Causes:

  • Overuse or repetitive stress (e.g., running, jumping)
  • Poor footwear or training techniques
  • Sudden increase in activity level
  • Tight calf muscles

Symptoms:

  • Pain and stiffness in the back of the heel
  • Swelling and tenderness
  • Thickening of the tendon
  • Difficulty walking or pushing off the foot
  • Sudden sharp pain and a “pop” (in rupture)

Diagnosis:

  • Physical exam (e.g., Thompson test for rupture)
  • Ultrasound or MRI for tendon evaluation

Treatment:

  • Conservative: Rest, ice, heel lifts, physiotherapy, eccentric exercises, NSAIDs
  • Surgical: Tendon repair or debridement in severe or non-responsive cases
