Ankle and subtalar arthritis involve degeneration or inflammation of the joints in the lower part of the leg and foot, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility.
Ankle Arthritis
Affects the tibiotalar joint (where the shin bone meets the ankle bone).
Subtalar Arthritis
Affects the subtalar joint, located between the talus and calcaneus (heel bone), crucial for side-to-side foot movement.
Causes:
- Post-traumatic (after fractures or sprains)
- Osteoarthritis (age-related wear and tear)
- Rheumatoid arthritis or other inflammatory conditions
Symptoms:
- Pain with walking or standing
- Swelling and stiffness in the joint
- Decreased range of motion
- Difficulty walking on uneven surfaces (especially in subtalar arthritis)
Diagnosis:
- Physical examination
- X-rays, CT, or MRI to assess joint damage
Treatment:
- Conservative: Rest, bracing, anti-inflammatory medications, physiotherapy
- Injections: Corticosteroids for temporary relief
- Surgery: Joint fusion (arthrodesis) or joint replacement in advanced cases
