Ankle Sprain And Instability

Ankle sprain is an injury to the ligaments of the ankle, typically caused by a twisting motion, while ankle instability refers to chronic looseness or weakness of the ankle due to repeated sprains or inadequate healing.

Causes:

  • Sudden twisting or rolling of the ankle
  • Sports injuries
  • Walking or running on uneven surfaces
  • Weak ligaments or poor proprioception

Symptoms:

  • Pain, swelling, and bruising around the ankle
  • Difficulty bearing weight
  • Repeated “giving way” of the ankle (instability)
  • Feeling of weakness or wobbliness

Diagnosis:

  • Clinical examination
  • Stress X-rays or MRI to assess ligament damage

Treatment:

  • Acute sprain: R.I.C.E (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation), bracing, NSAIDs
  • Chronic instability: Physiotherapy to strengthen muscles and improve balance
  • Surgery: Ligament repair or reconstruction in persistent or severe cases
