Charcot foot is a serious complication of diabetes, where there is progressive destruction of bones, joints, and soft tissues in the foot and ankle due to neuropathy (nerve damage).
Causes:
- Peripheral neuropathy (loss of protective sensation)
- Minor trauma or repetitive stress goes unnoticed
- Continued walking leads to bone and joint breakdown
Symptoms:
- Warm, swollen, red foot (often mistaken for infection)
- Little or no pain despite severe damage
- Foot deformity (e.g., “rocker-bottom” foot) in later stages
Diagnosis:
- Clinical signs in a diabetic patient with neuropathy
- X-ray, MRI, or bone scan to assess bone damage and rule out infection
Treatment:
- Early (acute) phase: Immobilization with total contact casting, non-weight bearing
- Later phase: Custom footwear or braces to support the foot
- Surgery: Required for severe deformities or unstable joints
