Conginatal Foot And Ankle Deformity

Congenital foot and ankle deformities are structural abnormalities present at birth that affect the shape, position, or function of the foot and/or ankle.

Common Types:

  • Clubfoot (Talipes Equinovarus): Foot turned inward and downward
  • Congenital Vertical Talus: Rigid flatfoot with upward-facing sole
  • Metatarsus Adductus: Inward bending of the front of the foot
  • Calcaneovalgus Foot: Foot bent upward and outward
  • Congenital Flatfoot: Absence of arch from birth

Causes:

  • Genetic factors

  • Syndromes or chromosomal abnormalities

Symptoms:

  • Visible foot deformity at birth
  • Abnormal walking pattern as the child grows
  • Possible pain or difficulty with shoe fitting

Diagnosis:

  • X-rays or ultrasound
  • Neurological assessment if needed

Treatment:

  • Non-surgical: Stretching, casting (e.g., Ponseti method), orthotics
  • Surgical: Required in resistant or severe cases
