Diabetic Foot Ulcer

A diabetic foot ulcer is an open sore or wound, usually on the bottom of the foot, that occurs in people with diabetes due to nerve damage (neuropathy) and poor blood circulation.

Causes:

  • Peripheral neuropathy (loss of sensation)
  • Poor blood flow (peripheral arterial disease)
  • Foot deformities or pressure points
  • Poor foot hygiene or trauma
  • Improper footwear

Symptoms:

  • Open wound or sore, often painless
  • Swelling, redness, or discharge
  • Foul odor or black tissue (gangrene) in severe cases

Diagnosis:

  • Clinical examination and wound assessment
  • Blood tests, X-rays, or Doppler studies to check for infection and blood flow

Treatment:

  • Wound care: Debridement, dressings, offloading pressure
  • Infection control: Antibiotics if infected
  • Blood sugar control: Crucial for healing
  • Surgery: May be needed in severe or non-healing cases
