Hallux Varus

Hallux varus is a deformity where the big toe deviates medially (toward the midline of the body), away from the second toe.

Causes:

  • Overcorrection of a bunion (hallux valgus) surgery
  • Congenital (present at birth)
  • Trauma or tendon imbalance
  • Inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis

Symptoms:

  • Medial deviation of the big toe
  • Pain or difficulty in walking
  • Shoe fitting problems
  • Instability or imbalance during gait

Diagnosis:

  • Clinical examination
  • X-rays to assess the angle and joint alignment

Treatment:

  • Mild cases: Toe splints, taping, footwear modification
  • Severe or symptomatic cases: Surgical correction (soft tissue balancing or bone realignment)
