
Hallux varus is a deformity where the big toe deviates medially (toward the midline of the body), away from the second toe.
Causes:
- Overcorrection of a bunion (hallux valgus) surgery
- Congenital (present at birth)
- Trauma or tendon imbalance
- Inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis
Symptoms:
- Medial deviation of the big toe
- Pain or difficulty in walking
- Shoe fitting problems
- Instability or imbalance during gait
Diagnosis:
- Clinical examination
- X-rays to assess the angle and joint alignment
Treatment:
- Mild cases: Toe splints, taping, footwear modification
- Severe or symptomatic cases: Surgical correction (soft tissue balancing or bone realignment)
