Heel Pain

Heel pain can be caused by several factors, with plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendinitis being the most common

Common Causes of Heel Pain:

  • Plantar Fasciitis: Inflammation of the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue on the bottom of the foot connecting the heel to the toes.
  • Achilles Tendinitis: Inflammation of the Achilles tendon, which connects the calf muscle to the heel bone.
  • Bone Spurs: Abnormal bony growths that can develop on the heel bone.
  • Stress Fractures: Tiny cracks in the bone, often caused by overuse.
  • Other Conditions: Bursitis, inflamed tendons, and injuries can also cause heel pain.
  • Symptoms of Heel Pain:
  • Pain, soreness, or tenderness in the heel area.
  • Pain that worsens in the morning or after periods of rest.
  • Pain that is centered under the heel (with plantar fasciitis).
  • Sever’s Disease: A condition that affects growing teens and causes pain in the heel bone.
  • Pain behind the heel (with Achilles tendinitis).
  • Swelling and tenderness around the heel.
  • Pain when starting activity after resting.
  • Difficulty walking or participating in daily activities.

When to See a Doctor:

  • If pain is severe, interferes with daily activities, or doesn’t improve with home care.
  • If you suspect a more serious condition like a stress fracture or injury.
  • If heel pain persists for more than a week.

Treatment for Heel Pain:

  • Home Care: Rest, ice, pain relievers, stretching, and wearing supportive shoes.
  • Medical Treatment: Physical therapy, injections, orthotics, or in rare cases, surgery.
