Heel Spur

A posterior heel spur is a bony growth on the back of the heel bone (calcaneus) where the Achilles tendon attaches.

Causes:

  • Chronic stress or traction from the Achilles tendon
  • Repetitive activities like running or jumping
  • Tight calf muscles
  • Poor footwear

Symptoms:

  • Pain and swelling at the back of the heel
  • Discomfort while wearing shoes with rigid backs
  • Tenderness over the Achilles insertion
  • May be associated with Haglund’s deformity

Diagnosis:

  • Physical exam and X-ray to confirm spur location

Treatment:

  • Heel pads or open-back shoes
  • Stretching and strengthening exercises
  • Ice and anti-inflammatory medications
  • If severe, surgical removal of the spur
