A posterior heel spur is a bony growth on the back of the heel bone (calcaneus) where the Achilles tendon attaches.
Causes:
- Chronic stress or traction from the Achilles tendon
- Repetitive activities like running or jumping
- Tight calf muscles
- Poor footwear
Symptoms:
- Pain and swelling at the back of the heel
- Discomfort while wearing shoes with rigid backs
- Tenderness over the Achilles insertion
- May be associated with Haglund’s deformity
Diagnosis:
- Physical exam and X-ray to confirm spur location
Treatment:
- Heel pads or open-back shoes
- Stretching and strengthening exercises
- Ice and anti-inflammatory medications
- If severe, surgical removal of the spur
