Midfoot arthritis refers to degeneration or inflammation of the joints in the middle part of the foot, particularly affecting the tarsometatarsal (TMT) joints.

Causes:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis or other inflammatory conditions
  • Repetitive stress or overuse

Symptoms:

  • Pain and stiffness in the midfoot
  • Swelling and tenderness
  • Difficulty walking, especially on uneven surfaces
  • Pain worsens with activity and improves with rest

Diagnosis:

  • Physical examination
  • Weight-bearing X-rays
  • CT or MRI for detailed joint evaluation

Treatment:

  • Non-surgical: Rest, activity modification, NSAIDs, orthotics, stiff-soled shoes
  • Injections: Corticosteroids for temporary relief
  • Surgical: Joint fusion (arthrodesis) in severe or unresponsive cases
